Myanmar Election 2015 in Numbers

Myanmar will hold its first nationwide free and fair election (sort of) in 25 years on 8th of November 2015. The main opposition party led by the Nobel laureate Aung San Su Kyi is poised to win a landslide election. It is interesting to see the election in the numbers.

  • Total seats for upper house: 224 (additional 56 seats reserved for military appointed MPs)
  • Total seats for lower house: 325 (additional 110 seats reserved for military appointed MPs)
  • State/Region with lowest lower house seats: Kayin and Kayah States (7 each)
  • State/Region with highest lower house seats: Shan State (56)
  • Total population: 50,325,498
  • Average population per lower house seat: 154,848 per seat

Altogether, there are 35,228,918 people living in the Bamar majority ethnic areas (seven regions) and 15,096,580 people living in the ethnic majority areas (seven states). Total lower house seats for the seven Bamah regions are 202 and for ethnic States are 123 seats. For upper house, both regions and states have 112 seats each. Total union seats for Bamah ethnic regions are 325 while for ethnic states is 224. Average population for lower house seats in Bamah regions is 174,401 and for ethnic states are 122,736. For upper house, average population per seat for Bamah regions is 314,544 and for ethnic states is 134,791. For union parliament, average population per seat for Bamah regions is 112,194 while for ethnic states is 64,241.
